Rhinebeck Therapy

Your first session

What to expect when you come in, and how we’ll work together after that.

It’s more conversation than couch

The word “therapy” can be intimidating. You may picture lying on a couch, staring at the ceiling, while someone asks about your childhood. We will explore your history, but my style is natural, conversational, and at times humorous. For the record, I only have chairs.

The intake

In 50 minutes, I’ll try to get as full a picture of you as I can: your family, work, history, and most of all, what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. Sessions are in person in Rhinebeck or online.

After that

Each week, we’ll focus on what brought you in, plus anything new that comes up. Often, what people think brings them to therapy isn’t what they end up spending the most time on. Between sessions, you’ll have small things to try, and we’ll talk about how they went.

What I’m here for

My job is to help you spot what’s getting in the way and start working on it. I’ll challenge you, and encourage you to challenge yourself. I’m also careful not to drive a spade through the dig site when it only needs a small chisel and a brush. The goal isn’t to turn you into a different person. It’s to help you understand why you do what you do, and make the changes that matter.

If you'd like to talk, I'd be glad to hear from you.
